Abstract

Sulfonamide moiety is the backbone of various antimicrobial, anticancer, antiglaucoma, anticonvulsant, uricosuric agents, and numerous other drugs. The age-old demand of sulfonamides as powerful antimicrobial agents is still in vogue and will never lose its favor for having the facilities of cheap availability, low toxicity, and excellent activity against bacterial infections. Besides their medicinal values, the sulfonamide functional group has tremendous synthetic applications. Reflecting on their diverse roles, many powerful methodologies have been developed for the synthesis of sulfonamide. This present literary survey particularly spotlights the synthesis of sulfonamide under green conditions. A critical view on the mechanistic aspects of selected examples gives extra dimension to this review.
