Abstract

Treatment of cyclic sulfates of vic-diois with triphenylphosphine and iodine offers the corresponding olefins in high yields at room temperature. Both cyclic sulfates of d,l-hydrobenzoin and meso-hydrobenzoin give trans-stilbene.
