Abstract

In this study, an eco-friendly dyeing method of wool fabric was adopted using natural dye extracted from henna leaves in the Decamethyl Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) medium. D5 was used to reduce the consumption of the high amount of water and salt needed in traditional dyeing. Wool fabric dyed with different amounts of Henna extract/Decamethyl Cyclopentasiloxane at different dyeing temperatures (40 °C, 60°C, 80°C  and 90°C). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to study the effect of the D5 on the morphology and elemental composition of the fiber surface. The dyeing and fastness properties of the dyed fabric were also investigated. The results showed that the dye uptake, fixation rate, and color strength of the samples dyed in this system were higher than water-based dyed samples. The dye uptake rates of the samples dyed in this system were 77–83% as compared with 64–71% for the water-based dyed samples. SEM and EDX results illustrated that dyeing in the D5 medium did not show any adverse effect on the morphology and elemental composition of the fiber surface.
