Nanoparticles applications in poultry production: an updated review

SUMMARY

Nanotechnology is an innovative promising technology that has a great scope of applications as well as a socio-economic potential in poultry industry sector. Nanoparticles (NPs) show advantages of high absorption and bioavailability with more effective delivering to the target tissue compared to their bulk particles. Nanomaterials show variable forms, sizes, shapes, applications, surface modifications, charges and natures. Top-down and bottom-up methods are the common types of NPs preparation. There are different mechanisms through which NPs could exert their action. In the poultry field, NPs have been considered in diagnosis of many diseases using different techniques, vaccines preparations and immuno-stimulation, disinfection, production enhancement, detection of food adulteration and antimicrobial activities (antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antifungal) and antimycotoxins. As a result of enhancement of poultry production and reducing the bacterial load after using NPs, the antibiotics drug resistance obstacle can be overcome. Despite the wide benefits of using NPs in poultry production, some concerns about their safety and hazardous effects should be regarded. Therefore, this review article is focused on NPs’ types, manufacture, mode of actions, and different applications with reference to safety and hazards impact.

Wafaa A. Abd El-Ghany

Prof. Dr. Wafaa A. Abd El-Ghany is a full Professor of Poultry Diseases at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University. She got her Professorship in 2014. She has authored and coauthored several peer reviewed researches in international and regional per-reviewed journals. She is serving as an editor and a reviewer of several reputed international and local journals. She has supervised many Master and PhD Theses. She is sharing in many projects in the area of poultry production or education either as a principle investigator or Co-investigator. She has been bestowed by many national awards for excellence in research. She has a membership with many scientific professional organizations and associations. She was appointed to many academic positions and units’ supervision in her university and the faculty. She has invited as a head of sessions, speaker or organizer for several international and local scientific conferences.

Mohamed Shaalan

Dr. Mohamed Shaalan is a lecturer of veterinary pathology at the faculty of veterinary medicine, Cairo University, Egypt. He got his doctoral degree in 2017 from the University of veterinary medicine Vienna, Austria. His research interests focus on the various biomedical applications of nanoparticles in veterinary medicine and assessment of their toxicity. He was awarded national and international scientific awards such as Charles Capen award for toxicologic pathology and Cairo University encouragement award for excellence in scientific research. Also, he is a reviewer for different international journals in veterinary medicine and nanotechnology.

Heba M. Salem

Dr. Heba Mohammed Salem works as an Associate Professor of Poultry Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University since 2020. She got her master in Veterinary Science, Cairo University in 2012 and Philosophy Degree in Poultry and Rabbit Diseases, Cairo University in 2015. She participated in many training courses in the field of poultry and rabbit diseases for students, graduates, and veterinarians. She has many publications in the field of poultry and rabbit diseases, and she was honored by Cairo University with Excellence Awards for her international Publication. She is a reviewer in many international journals, supervised many Master Theses, and participated in many scientific conferences.
