Editorial: honour and gratitude

I was named Editor-in-Chief of World’s Poultry Science Journal, beginning 1 June 2021. I would like to thank the Board of Directors of the World’s Poultry Science Association for their confidence in me and for entrusting the journal to my care. It is a great honour to serve the association in this capacity. I would also like to thank the previous Editors-in-Chief, Dr. Lucy Waldron and Dr. Juliet Roberts, for their assistance as I transitioned into my new role as Editor-in-Chief of the journal. Again, this is a great honour for me, and I sincerely hope that my performance lives up to the trust placed in me by the board.

I have good news to share concerning many metrics for World’s Poultry Science Journal. The 2020 Journal Citation Reports were released, and I am pleased to report that World’s Poultry Science Journal has seen its Impact Factor increase from 1.364 in 2018 to 1.802 in 2019 to 2.915 in 2020. This increase was due in part to a change in the method of impact factor calculation. Clarivate adjusted the time for inclusion of content for the calculation from the issue date to the online publication date. World’s Poultry Science Journal is published online by Taylor and Francis prior to the issue date. The Impact Factor for many journals increased as a result of this change. In addition, the average number of days from article acceptance to online publication for the journal decreased from 73 days in 2019, to 54 days in 2020, to 36 days year-to-date for 2021. Thus, the change in publishers to Taylor and Francis and the shift to earlier online publication helped to increase the impact factor of the journal. Importantly, World’s Poultry Science Journal also moved up in the rankings and is now ranked number 12 out of 63 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy & Animals Science category (previously 15/63). In my opinion, this relative ranking is more important than Impact Factor. I want to commend the Board of Directors for selecting Taylor and Francis to publish our journal and the team at Taylor and Francis for their efforts to decrease the time to publication and to market and increase readership of the journal worldwide. Finally, I want to thank the two previous Editors-in-Chief, Dr. Lucy Waldron and Dr. Juliet Roberts, for all of their efforts in building the journal to where it is today.

I look forward to serving the World’s Poultry Science Association as Editor-in-Chief for World’s Poultry Science Journal. My goal is to continue to increase readership and to make the journal even more relevant to poultry scientists and the poultry industries worldwide.
