Sergey V. Cherepanov

10 October 1952–29 May 2023

Sergey V. Cherepanov was born in Almaty (Kazakh Republic of the former USSR). He graduated from the Zootechnical Faculty of the Leningrad Agricultural Institute (1974) and in 1974–78 worked at the collective farm ‘Lensovetovsky’ (Leningrad Province). After his post-graduate course at the All-Russian Research Institute of Animal Genetics and Breeding (1979–1983), he received the degree of Candidate of Agricultural Sciences for his dissertation ‘Selection of a broiler chicken cross in conditions of cage housing’ (1983). Then, he worked at this Institute for many years as Senior Research Officer of the Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding and collaborated with the World’s leading breeding companies. During his last years, he worked at the BIOTROF company (Saint-Petersburg). He was a member of the World’s Poultry Science Association (WPSA) and its Russian branch for many years and actively participated in the organisation of several World’s Poultry Congresses in different countries. He also published many scientific papers.

We have lost a talented poultry scientist and our close friend, wonderful and gifted person. His scientific erudition and excellent English allowed him to communicate personally with poultry scientists from many countries of the world and to help his Russian colleagues in their contacts during international conferences, symposiums and congresses. As a talented publicist, he actively promoted worldwide the achievements of Russian poultry science and production. He actively contributed to the activity of the WPSA’s World’s Poultry Science Journal as its associate editor as well as different Russian scientific journals. Only the few closest people knew that Sergey was also an excellent painter with fine sense of humour and drew wonderful funny pictures about men and birds.

We would like to offer our condolences to Sergey’s relatives and friends who knew and loved him. The memory of Sergey V. Cherepanov will always live in the hearts of his relatives, friends and colleagues.
