Transitions at Educational Psychologist

Editorial statement

Educational Psychologist is the premier journal for discussion, debate, and advancement of theoretical and methodological issues in educational psychology. Over the past several decades and editorships, the journal has flourished in its mission to publish provocative and groundbreaking papers that have advanced the field in significant ways. Its influence has been far-reaching, touching on educational practice and policy as well as psychological theory. It is therefore with a sense of gratitude and reward that I end my editorship of Educational Psychologist; I consider it a privilege and honor to have carried forward the rich tradition of the journal.

Over the past five years, the journal has thrived. I am especially proud to have worked with authors and reviewers from around the world, many just starting their academic careers and many well-established in their craft. We have published 113 articles, each providing new perspectives on traditional topics in educational psychology such as self-regulation, math anxiety, and text comprehension as well as more cutting-edge topics such as systems theory, emotion regulation, and social and emotional learning. I also am thrilled to have published work on new methodological approaches to educational research and timely essays on educational policy and practice. The journal has seen a rise in meta-analytic treatment of extant literature, shedding light on issues such as motivation interventions and feedback processes. Our Guest Editors have produced outstanding collections of articles on topics such as social inclusion and exclusion in the classroom, race, ethnicity, and motivation, epistemic cognition, and writing, contributing to the field in new and exciting ways.

Many others are owed great thanks for contributing to the success of the journal during my tenure as editor. Educational Psychologist’s past editor, Clark Chinn, made my transition onto the journal seamless. My editorial board and a cadre of ad hoc reviewers have been absolutely outstanding, my editorial assistants have been the very best, and the staff at Taylor & Francis have made the job of getting each issue to press a breeze. All of these factors have helped the impact of the journal to grow exponentially; EP has enjoyed a place at the top of the rankings of educational journals over the past several years.

I am delighted to hand over my editorial duties to the two incoming editors, Jeffrey Greene and Lisa Linnenbrink-Garcia. Jeffrey and Lisa will bring to EP impressive editorial skills, a breadth of knowledge and experience in the discipline while appreciating multidisciplinary perspectives, and a commitment to carrying on the high level of mentorship and scholarship that has marked the journal over its long history. This editorial team is uniquely positioned to bring together scholars within the discipline and those whose work in related disciplines has the potential to grow our field in new and exciting ways.

In closing, I am honored and grateful to have been a part of the journal’s great history. I look forward to watching the new editors and contributors continue to build on the excellence of Educational Psychologist.
