A specific epididymo-vaginalitis of rams due to infection with an organism with many characteristics of the Brucella genus has been recognized, firstly in Australia and New Zealand, and more recently in California (McCowan and Schultz, Citation1956). Since the New Zealand and Australian ovine stains have been shown to be sufficiently stable and distinguishable from other established groups of the Brucella genus in a number of independently variable characters, it has been proposed that they be assigned to a new species, Brucella ovis (Buddie, Citation1956).
