Danger of contact infection from pig ringworm

Pages 69-70 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Extract

Sir,—The potential dangers involved in handling certain animals carrying ringworm infections are well known. The agents of cat, dog, guinea-pig, cattle and even horse ringworm are directly transmissible to man and may cause severe lesions on the body and scalp. The danger to children is frequently greater than that to adults. To the list of zoophilic dermatophytes of importance in New Zealand may now be added another, Microsporum nanum, the cause of pig ringworm.
