Uittreksel

Abstract

A simple technique is described by which it is possible to collect information on the utilization of different grass species by means of point surveys. This method enables the relative acceptability (utilization) of different species to be compared between different veld types, ecological regions, different treatments of factorial experiments, etc.

Interesting results have recently been obtained from a grazing experiment on the Bankenveld. Treatnients comprised 3 stocking rates, 3 levels of nitrogenous fertilizer and 3 levels of other fertilizer in factorial combination. On each treatment a five‐camp rotational grazing system was applied. According to the information obtained from this trial, it was possible to rank the species in respect of relative utilization (i.e. relative acceptability). The percentage utilization and mean heteht after utilization of individual species, as well, as means for ihe different treatments, were recorded. The influence of treatment main effects and interactions on the utilization of the different species is discussed.
