The excavation of 19th-century back-to-back housing and courts and the Kenyon Cutlery Works at the site of the Stephenson Blake-Type Foundry, Upper Allen Street, Kenyon Alley and Edward Street, Sheffield

Abstract

SUMMARY: Between 2004 and 2007, ARCUS undertook a programme of archaeological work at the site of the Stephenson Blake-Type Foundry, Sheffield, in advance of redevelopment. This article will focus on the results of the below-ground investigations. The archaeological work provided information on the domestic character of the site, with examples of the houses and courts revealed, and the industrial character of the site relating to the former Kenyon Cutlery Works. Excavation informed on how the site was developed, and on the material culture relating to everyday occupation and manufacturing on site, and highlighted the close relationship between housing and works.

This article draws heavily on the final reports for the phases of work compiled by ARCUS, and the authors of those reports should be credited with providing clear and concise results of this important site.

Cet article se concentre sur les résultats des fouilles en sous-sol. Le travail archéologique a fourni des informations sur le caractère domestique du site, avec des exemples de maison et de cours, et le caractère industriel du site lié à la précédente coutellerie Kenyon. Zwischen 2004 und 2007, vor neuer Bebauung, unternahm ARCUS ein Programm archäologischer Arbeiten auf dem Grundstück der Stephenson Blake-Type Gießerei, in Sheffield. Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit den Resultaten der Untersuchungen. Entre 2004 y 2007, ARCUS ha desarrollado un programa de investigación arqueológica en el yacimiento de Stephenson Blake-Type Foundry, Sheffield, antes de su reurbanización. Este artículo se centra en los resultados de las excavaciones. El trabajo arqueológico proporcionó información sobre el carácter doméstico del yacimiento, con ejemplos de las casas y corrales, y el carácter industrial del lugar relacionado con la antigua fábrica de cubiertos Kenyon.
