Notes
Throughout this paper I use the term “classical” analysis to refer to the theory and technique developed by Freud and his close colleagues in Vienna and Berlin, and then transplanted to North America and certain European centers after the Second World War.
Theoretically, of course, some element of unconscious thinking permeates all communication, just as some element of transference is in every relationship. But a large part of the patient’s ordinary communications in the analytic situation can at times be almost entirely secondary process thinking based on the reality principle.
After his death I learned that Dr. Michaels had a second analysis with Anna Freud that may account for their similar analytic styles.
