Riassunto
Scopo principale di questo lavoro è l'illustrazione per mezzo del microscopio a scansione, delle spore delle Pteridofite spontanee in Italia. Queste ammontano a 124 taxa specifici ed infraspecifici, le cui spore sono illustrate da 550 micrografie (3–8 per ogni taxon) radunate in 71 tavole.
Il lavoro consiste di una prefazione, una introduzione e quattro parti del testo vero e proprio. La prefazione è principalmente destinata a spiegare lo scopo del lavoro ed a ringraziare gli amici e colleghi che ci hanno offerto gentilmente aiuto nella nostra ricerca. L'introduzione è rivolta a dare alcune informazioni generali e dettagli sull'inquadramento tassonomico delle Pteridofite italiane, delle quali viene dato un elenco completo, sui materiali e metodi per il nostro studio, e sulle ricerche per reperire i dati citologici e geobotanici.
La prima parte fornisce i dati relativi a ciascuna specie e sottospecie, eccezionalmente varietà, studiate nel nostro lavoro. Essi consistono di varie informazioni suddivise nei seguenti paragrafi: a, b, c) il nome della specie o sottospecie, preceduto dal numero del genere e specie, e seguito dai sinonimi; d) l'esemplare di riferimento; e, f, g) la spiegazione delle figure, la descrizione e le dimensioni delle spore; h) il tipo di gamia, il livello di ploidia, i numeri cromosomici (n e 2n) e la formula genomica; i, l) l'areale generale ed italiano e la citazione delle carte della distribuzione; m) alcune brevi note sull'habitat e distribuzione altimetrica in Italia. Annotazioni sulla tassonomia, nomenclatura, citologia, geobotanica ed altri argomenti vengono dati per alcune famiglie, generi e specie.
La seconda parte consiste di una chiave dei generi, specie e sottospecie basata sulle caratteristiche palinologiche. La chiave si riferisce esclusivamente alle Pteridofite italiane ed è prevalentemente destinata alla identificazione dei suddetti taxa. Tuttavia essa rappresenta un buon strumento per mettere in evidenza le caratteristiche distintile dei generi, specie e sottospecie e per valutare le loro affinità.
La terza parte del lavoro è rappresentata da un glossario dei termini palinologici impiegati in pteridologia. Essa consta esclusivamente di termini concernenti le spore delle Pteridofite. In alcuni lemmi vengono forniti anche i corrispondenti termini latini ed inglesi. Trentasette disegni mostrano le caratteristiche generali delle spore delle pteridofite ed i tipi più comuni di ornamentazioni.
Alla fine del lavoro viene fornito l'elenco delle pubblicazioni citate nel testo. Esso consta di circa 360 riferimenti bibliografici riguardanti i più svariati argomenti.
Il lavoro è dovuto alla collaborazione di tutti e quattro gli autori, tuttavia ciascuna parte di esso è stata curata da uno o due autori solamente. Pertanto il nome di coloro che hanno elaborato il testo delle varie suddivisioni dell'introduzione, delle annotazioni, della chiave dei generi e specie, del glossario e dei riferimenti bibliografici è citato in parentesi quadra per ciascuna delle suddette parti. Gli autori dei vari paragrafi della prima parte sono citati in parentesi quadra nella introduzione dove sono elencati i dati forniti per ogni entità. L'arduo e lungo lavoro di coordinamento è stato svolto da Pichi Sermolli.
Viene stabilita la nuova combinazione Polypodium cambricum L. subsp. serrulatum (Sch. ex Arcang.) Pic. Ser.
The main object of this work is the illustration, by the scanning electron microscope, of the spores of the Pteridophyta native in Italy. These amount to 124 specific and infraspecific taxa, whose spores are illustrated by 550 micrographs (3–8 for each taxon) assembled in 71 plates.
The work consists of a preface, an introduction and four parts of the text proper. The preface is mainly devoted to explaining the aim of the work and to acknowledging those friends and colleagues who have kindly offered their help in our research. The introduction is intended for some general information and details on the taxonomical arrangement of the Italian Pteridophytes (of which a checklist is given) on the materials and methods for our research and on the investigations for providing the cytological and geobotanical data.
The first part supplies the data pertinent to each species and subspecies, occasionally variety, studied in our work. They consist of various information subdivided into the following paragraphs: a, b, c) the name of the species or subspecies, prefaced by the genus and species number, and followed by the synonyms; d) the voucher specimen; e, f, g) the captions of the figures, and the description and size of the spores; h) the kind of reproduction, ploidy level, chromosome numbers (n and 2n) and genomic formula; i, 1) the total and Italian range, and the citation of the distribution maps; and m) some concise notes on the habitat and altitudinal distribution in Italy. Annotations on the taxonomy, nomenclature, cytology, geobotany and other subjects are given for some families, genera and species.
The second part consists of a key to the genera, species and subspecies based on the palynological characteristics. The key strictly deals with the Italian Pteridophytes and is mainly intended for the identification of the above-mentioned taxa. However, it represents a good means for pointing out the distinctive characteristics of genera, species and subspecies and for valuing their affinities.
The third part of the work is a glossary of the palynological terms employed in pteridology. It consists of more than 142 terms, concerning the spores of the Pteridophytes only. Latin or English corresponding names are given for some terms. Thirtyseven drawings show the general features of the spores of Pteridophytes and the most common kinds of ornamentation.
The list of the publications quotes in the text is given at the end of the work. It consists of about 350 bibliographical references dealing with the most various subjects.
The work is the result of the collaboration of all four authors. However, each part of it has been prepared by one or two authors only. The name of those who have elaborated the text of the various subdivisions of the introduction, the annotations, the key of the genera and species, the glossary and the bibliographical references is quoted in square brackets for each of the above-mentioned parts. The authors of the various paragraphs of the first part are quoted, in square brackets, in the introduction where dealing with the data supplied for each entity. The arduous and long work of coordination was carried out by Pichi Sermolli.
The new combination Polypodium cambricum subsp. serrulatum (Sch. Ex Arcang.) Pic. Ser. is established.
