This paper covers the results of an investigation conducted for over ten years in the Sarcidano district (central Sardinia) with the object of locating, identifying and cataloging its orchidologic contingent.

Forty-three entities (belonging to 14 genera) have been found, eight apochromatic forms and ten interspecific hybrids of the genera Ophrys (6), Orchis (3) and Serapias (1).

The findings revealed that about 85% of orchids recognized up to now for the Sardinian flora are to be found in this region. For each species information is given on its habitat, flowering period, biological form, chorologic type and occurrence in the investigated area. New sightings rare for Sardinia are presented and a new nothosubspecies (Orchis × penzigiana nothosubsp. sardoa) is described. In addition problems of taxonomy and nomenclature are discussed.
