Archaeological Field Survey in the Environs of Aldborough (Isurium Brigantum)

Abstract

This paper presents the results of field surveys undertaken in 1987 and 1989–97 in the immediate vicinity of the Roman civitas capital of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, North Yorks). It presents the Roman finds from the survey, providing quantified analyses of pottery and ceramic building material as well as catalogues of the other artefacts collected. These studies provide new evidence for the history of the town and form the basis for a discussion of the development of the landscape in its environs, complementing other recent work at the site.

Acknowledgements

The RAS survey from 1989 to 1997 was undertaken by kind permission of the late Sir Henry Lawson-Tancred Bt., Sir Andrew Lawson-Tancred Bt, and Mr. Richard Sanderson. Among the tenant farmers of Aldborough, we are especially grateful to Messrs Thomas and Edward Craggs and Mr. Neil Bailes, who were at all times most accommodating. The survey was staffed wholly by members of the RAS and volunteers recruited locally and further afield. They were too numerous to list in full, but special thanks are due to Chris and Diana Dell for hospitality and assistance with finds processing facilities, and to Jack McFarlane for his surveying expertise. Chris Irish was an ever-present volunteer who filled numerous roles, especially as part of the surveying team. Jon Beavis-Harrison took care of metal-detecting, and also arranged our initial contacts with several local farmers. We are most grateful to the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, whose seed-corn grant helped the project to become established in 1989. The completion of work on the publication of this project was funded by generous grants from the Society of Antiquaries of London. During the work on the publication, Dr. Jason Lucas and Dr. Lacey Wallace undertook a considerable amount of work on the mapping and production of the illustrations used here.
