ABSTRACT

Infectious endophthalmitis is an uncommon yet disastrous complication in cataract surgery in which bacterial attachment and proliferation onto intraocular lens (IOL) is a prominent etiological factor in the pathogenesis. Herein, hyaluronic acid and chitosan polyelectrolyte multilayer was coated onto IOL. The viscoelastic property analysis of the surface coating indicates that a soft and hydrated coating was obtained on the IOL surface. The in vitro antibacterial activity test results indicate that such coating present excellent antiadhesion and antibacterial properties. Intraocular implantation results show that the IOL with anti-infective modification has potential effects on preventing acute infectious endophthalmitis development.
