Abstract
Despite the use of various anti-bullying programs, bullying continues to plague middle schools. However, there is an approach to bullying that complements other programs and can be easily integrated into course curriculum. This approach uses young adult novels to encourage adolescents to use perspective taking and empathy building through intentional class texts, activities, and discussion. It will empower adolescent bystanders to intervene when bullying occurs. Young adolescents are particularly well suited for this approach due to their cognitive and social development, as they are beginning to understand concepts at a deeper level and from multiple perspectives. Various examples of texts that can be used with this approach are provided as are ways to encourage discussion.
