Notes

1. The inclusion of Bernard Suits’ Return of the Grasshopper was made possible via Hurka’s arrangements with Cheryl Ballantyne (Suits’ widow and possessor of the copyright to his works) and William Morgan (a contemporary of Suits’ who previously edited a book-length version of the sequel from five non-identical unpublished drafts; a copy of which was used to produce Hurka’s abridged version published herein – five chapters in total were cut). Thanks to Thomas Hurka and William Morgan for helpfully conveying this background information to me via email correspondence.

2. Currently exclusively available at the University of Waterloo Library’s Bernard Suits fonds (Special Collections: GA 251).

3. The opening line of my research copy of Return of the Grasshopper reads ‘That son of a bitch’ (the Skepticus character is here referring to Suits himself as the author of The Grasshopper). Compare the opening line of Hurka’s version: ‘It was a fine spring day.’

4. Many thanks to Thomas Hurka, who made me aware of this connection.
