Kernel methods for the estimation of discrete distributions

Pages 189-200 | Received 16 Jan 1982, Published online: 20 Mar 2007

Abstract

Kernel functions for categorical data with an infinite number of cells arc proposed, including a variable kernel function, analogous in the variable kernel function for continuous data Results of simulation studies are given to compare the performances of the kernel functions with other more standard techniques. In particular a considerable improvement is shown over the maximum likelihood estimator based on the relative frequencies.
