Harold R. Hungerford is a professor emeritus in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, and President of the Board of Directors of the Center for Instruction, Staff Development, and Evaluation, Carbondale, Illinois. Hungerford taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for 18 years before initiating a career in higher education, focused on environmental education and science education, in 1970. He has been recognized as an important presence in environmental education since the 1970s and has gained state, national, and international acclaim for his work in environmental education research and curriculum development. Hungerford's focus is on research-based practice and curriculum. His research thrust has probed the precursors of responsible environmental behavior on the part of citizens and how that may be encouraged and developed through educational materials.
