Abstract
In bubble column reactors, flow regime characteristics significantly influence hydrodynamic and transport phenomena. It is shown that the boundary between the bubble flow and the churn turbulent flow regimes can be predicted analytically. Analytical solutions for both coalescing and non-coalescing liquids are presented. The validity of the analytical expressions is illustrated by comparing the calculated values of the transition velocities to the observed ones in the literature. Finally, the limitations of this technique are pointed out.
