The Effect of Hot Spot Length on the Behavior of Straight Wire Incandescent Filaments

Pages 163-170 | Published online: 20 Sep 2013

Abstract

This paper presents a theoretical treatment of the burnout of tungsten filaments containing “hot spots” of finite length. The relationship between filament life, fractional mass loss, and defect length is determined. It is concluded that hot spot length must be taken into account if fractional mass loss is used as a predictor of filament life.
