A Meter to Measure ESI Footcandles

Pages 220-223 | Published online: 20 Sep 2013

Abstract

The development of equivalent sphere illumination (ESI) as a useful tool for evaluating lighting installations has been hampered by the lack of readily available measuring equipment. This paper illustrates how the angular response of a light meter can be modified by the use of shields to simulate the response of the target and background used to define the ESI. By taking readings with and without the shield the value of the ESI can be determined using a graph.
