Abstract
The synthesis and preliminary characterization of new discotic-forming molecules prepared by peralkanoylation of saccharides is described. In particular, the mesomorphic properties of α- and β-anomers of penta-O- n-decanoyl glucopyranose have been confirmed by microscopy, liquid crystal induced circular dichroism, and X-ray diffraction of non-oriented samples. A non- hexagonal columnar ordering is proposed.
