ABSTRACT
Three compounds of the series of 4(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy) benzylidene 4″-n-decyloxyaniline (ABBDA) were synthesized varying the number of carbon atoms in the alkyloxy chain. The temperature and enthalpies of the transitions were determined, as were the indices of refraction. The compound with n = 1 has a 100°C wide nematic phase. Those with n = 7 and n = 9 show a smectic C phase (with a tilt angle of 30. 5° for n = 7) and a nematic phase upon heating and other monotropic phases upon cooling. All present polymorphism in the solid state.
