A New Model for the Molecular Arrangements in Chromonic Mesophases

Abstract

A new model is proposed for the structure of the chromonic M phase. The molecules are stacked in an untilted fashion in simple columns which lie in a herringbone array within the water continuum. An instantaneous snapshot picture of the model has only orthorhombic symmetry but rotational disorder gives rise to the hexagonal symmetry of the M phase in a manner similar to that which operates in the thermotropic SB phase.
