Nonequilibrium Periodic Reorientation Induced by Magnetic Field in Lyotropic Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract

Nonequilibrium periodic textures induced by a magnetic field are studied in the lyotropic nematic phases of the mixtures disodium cromoglycate-water and potassium laurate-decanol-water. The decrease of the wavelength of the periodicity with inceasing magnetic field is measured and qualitative agreement with recent theories is found.
