Abstract

Analysis shows that the transient nematic effect, together with high temperature operation of a highly conjugated liquid crystal provides a simple method to achieve high speed modulation of visible light. A nematic electro-optic modulator with 30 μs response (rise+ decay) time and contrast ratio greater than 100:1 was demonstrated in a parallel-aligned reflective cell consisting of a commercially available liquid crystal.
