Some problems with the grain-boundary-dislocation climb mechanism for diffusion-induced grain boundary migration, and possible solutions

Pages L39-L44 | Received 25 Mar 1983, Accepted 21 Sep 1983, Published online: 13 Sep 2006

Abstract

A mass balance for the postulated mechanism of diffusion-induced grain boundary migration (DIGM) is presented and it is shown that the mass balance is not completely consistent with the predicted behaviour described by Balluffi and Cahn (1981). Some refinements of the proposed mechanism are suggested, in the light of some recent experimental observations.
