The orientation and temperature dependence of the work-hardening rate of single crystal Ni3(Al3, Ti)

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the work-hardening rate at 1% true strain has been determined for Ni-rich, stoichiometric and Al-rich single crystals of Ni3(Al, Ti), having compression axes in the 〈123〉, 〈l44〉, 〈111〉 and 〈001〉 directions. Test temperatures were in the range -110 to 1000°C. Work-hardening rates were found to be strongly orientation-dependent and reached values as high as 64% of the shear modulus for oertain orientations and temperatures. Slip mechanisms are proposed to explain these observations and are discussed in terms of Schmid factor considerations and evidence available from transmission electron microscopy.
