Abstract

Tenfold twins have been found in a splat-quenched NiZr alloy by selected-area electron diffraction, dark-field and high-resolution electron microscopy. The NiZr phase has a C-centred orthorhombic lattice and the twinning plane is either (110) or (100) with an angle of about 36° between these two planes. The relationship between five- or tenfold twins and the quasicrystalline icosahedral phase is discussed.
