The formation and evolution of edges on sputter-eroded surfaces

Abstract

The generation and evolution of surface discontinuities or edges during sputtering erosion of homogeneous solids bombarded by spatially uniform ion fluxes is considered within the framework of nonlinear wave propagation theory. Edges correspond to ‘shocks’ in this theory, and the density conservation law across shocks is used to enable edge evolution and motion to be predicted.
