A structural model of the orthorhombic C31-Al60Mn11Ni4 approximant

Abstract

A close relationship between the structural subunits of the known structure of Al60Mn11Ni4 and the unknown C31-Al60Mn11Ni4 has been found from their high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) images. A space group Pmmn was derived from convergent-beam electron diffraction patterns, and a layer structural model of C31-Al60Mn11Ni4 was constructed on the basis of the structure of Al60Mn11Ni4. The simulated HREM images and electron diffraction patterns agree with the experimental results.
