Random and non-random bonding in covalent alloys

Abstract

An expression for the configurational entropy due to the different types of bonds is derived by an extension of the solution for a one-dimensional Ising lattice. It is valid in an approximation which ignores ring configurations containing all like atoms. Expressions are derived which describe the equilibrium bond concentrations in situations ranging between the extremes of completely non-random bonding (CBN) and completely random bonding (CRB). It is found that previously used expressions for CRB are incorrect in cases when one of the alloy constituents has three or more bonds. The theory is also used to find the effect of non-random bonding on the equilibrium concentration of bond defects, and previous errors are corrected.
