Advances in augmenting biogas generation for achieving sustainable development

ABSTRACT

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has gained significant attention in the quest for sustainable renewable energy sources. This article explores various substrates and pre-treatment methods for enhancing biogas production, emphasising process stability. Pre-treatment of lignocellulosic substrates and other substrates has been found to boost the hydrolysis rate. The article presents several optimisation techniques, including response surface methodology, Taguchi with grey relational analysis, mathematical models, logistic function models, modified Gompertz, and code models, which have been used for biogas enhancement. The mixing ratio, temperature, and pH have been reported to be the most critical variables, significantly affecting biogas production. It has been observed that anaerobic co-digestion with different organic fractions appears to be a promising alternative for boosting the entire energy sector. To analyze the scope of biomethane production from various wastes, this review paper employs the VOS Viewer tool and paves the way for harmonised research in this area. VOS Viewer, a Java-based platform-independent software, facilitates network data analysis and visualisation. To obtain information about anaerobic digestion and methane production, different electronic databases (i.e. ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar) have been used.
