When the above mentioned article was first published online, the following note “8. Although the Syrian regime’s education system was also later decertified, some were still unhappy that the possibility of obtaining an internationally recognised school certificate had already been removed or made difficult earlier because of the takeover of regime schools.” under the “Notes” section was incorrect.
This is now corrected as “8. Graduating from a Syrian regime school also does not guarantee a student will not face difficulties abroad. However, people we spoke to were still unhappy that the possibility of obtaining an internationally recognised school certificate had been removed or made difficult; some students attempted to navigate this by studying in both systems simultaneously, but this was a huge workload and not always possible.” and the article has been republished online.
