Graphical displays in information systems: some data properties influencing the effectiveness of alternative forms

Pages 43-56 | Published online: 07 Mar 2007

Abstract

Abstract. A number of indications which bear upon the utility of graphical representations of data are presented. The indications are based upon the apparent cognitive demands of particular forms of information abstraction. A study is reported where hypotheses concerning the appropriateness of alternative forms of graphical display for the presentation of particular properties of data are tested. A large number of significant differences between alternative forms of presentation in terms of effectiveness for communicating major features of data are identified and discussed.
