Abstract

It is our great pleasure to present this special issue of Heat Transfer Engineering with a selection of papers presented at the 21st National & 10th ISHMT-ASME Heat and Mass Transfer Conference, held on December 27–30, 2011. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Indian Society of Heat and Mass Transfer (ISHMT) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was held at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras campus in Chennai, India.

Shripad T. Revankar

Shripad T. Revankar is a professor of nuclear engineering and Director of the Multiphase and Fuel Cell Research Laboratory in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University. He was also a WCU visiting professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology in the Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering in South Korea until 2013. Dr. Revankar received his B.S. (1975), M.S. (1977) and Ph.D. (1983) in physics from Karnatak University, India, M.Eng. (1982) in nuclear engineering from McMaster University, Canada, and postdoctoral training at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and at the Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1984 to 1987. His research interests are in the areas of nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and safety, multiphase heat transfer, multiphase flow in porous media, instrumentation and measurement, fuel cell design, simulation and power systems, and nuclear hydrogen generation. He has published more than 300 technical papers in archival journals and conference proceedings. He is an active member of the AIChE, ANS, AAAS, ECS, and ASEE. He is on the editorial board of several journals, including Heat Transfer Engineering. He is a fellow of the ASME.

C. Balaji

C. Balaji is a currently a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He graduated in mechanical engineering from Guindy Engineering College, Chennai (1990), and obtained his M.Tech (1992) and Ph.D. (1995) both from IIT Madras. He has about 130 journal publications to his credit and several in conferences. He is the author of a graduate-level textbook on optimization of thermal systems. His research interests include computational and experimental heat transfer, optimization in thermal sciences, inverse heat transfer, satellite meteorology, and numerical weather prediction. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.
