Abstract

In this article, the authors present an operator's view on the evolution towards optical fiber telecommunication networks. First we describe the evolution of standards related to optical fiber. Then we propose a description of hot topics concerning fiber infrastructure over three areas of the telecommunication networks (transport, access, and home). Finally we highlight the key challenges related to fiber-based optical communication networks.

Acknowledgments

The authors would like to thank Irène and Michel Joindot for careful reading and detailed comments on the manuscript.

Notes

1 280 Mbit/s in the East-West fiber of the fiber pair, and 280 Mbit/s in the West-East fiber of the fiber pair: capacity is usually indicated in only one direction.
