Abstract
Body image among female adolescents has gained increasing attention of leisure researchers. However, very few studies have specifically answered how to tackle leisure constraints imposed by body image. This study investigated how body image and beliefs about appearance related to leisure constraints as well as the moderating effect of leisure self-efficacy. Survey data were collected from 388 female adolescents in Taiwan. The results indicate that body image dissatisfaction and negative beliefs about appearance are positively related to leisure constraints. Furthermore, the presence of leisure self-efficacy weakens the relationships of body image dissatisfaction and negative beliefs about appearance to leisure constraints. The implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are discussed subsequently.
