Counterpoints in the sociology of leisure

Pages 247-253 | Published online: 13 Jul 2009

Abstract

In this article I develop three themes in the contemporary sociological study of leisure: (1) Leisure is complex, despite the deceptive appeal of simplification. (2) Leisure is social, embedded in the roles and conflicts of a divided social system. (3) Leisure is contextual without being determined. Leisure should not be trivialized; it is important just because it is complex, social and contextual.
