Abstract

Scientific foundations of thermoelastic stress analysis and photoacoustic method for the stress detection are compared. Experimental results obtained by the photoacoustic method for Vickers indentation zones in ceramics and metals are presented. The influence of the given external and residual stresses on the photoacoustic images of Vickers indentations is demonstrated both for ceramics and metals. An example of near surface machining stresses influence on photoacoustic images of Vickers indentations in ceramics is also presented. Experimental results obtained by photoacoustic method are compared with available theoretical models of the photoacoustic effect in stressed materials.
