Unfortunately, the mass media—and academia, too—is prone to making very similar errors time and again: one is reminded of the inane, but oft-made, claim that the North Vietnamese somehow were not “real” communists because they were nationalists. The North Vietnamese certainly were nationalists; however, theoretically inconvenient though it was from a Marxist perspective, they also were communists, and said so loudly and often.
