Nuclearization of Nigeria

Pages 135-157 | Published online: 24 Sep 2007

Abstract

There is little or no principled opposition within Nigeria to the effort to acquire and exploit nuclear technology. Fear of South Africa, energy worries, and a desire to be counted among the significant powers of the world impel many in the bureaucracy and political leadership to argue for a nuclear capability. Such a project, however, will confront enormous practical problems, not the least of which will be convincing Western technological suppliers that Nigeria has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons.
