3. In December 2005, an estimated 5000 Australians took over the beach at Cronulla in Sydney. Many were fuelled by alcohol and some sections of the crowd became violent as they waved the national flag and attacked anyone who looked Middle Eastern in appearance. In the preceding week, there had been several clashes between young Middle Eastern men and life-savers on the beach.
