Tackling Taboo Topics: Case Studies in Group Work

Abstract

Frequently, group work process involves confronting uncomfortable issues, for group members and the leader. This article focuses on taboo topics in the group, providing examples of how a taboo topic can present in the group, the leader's use of self in confronting the taboo topic, and the benefits of addressing these sensitive subjects in the group. Working through uncomfortable issues allows the group to progress and provides the leader with increased confidence in dealing with taboo issues in the future. Principles for working through taboo topics are offered and illustrated through application to two case examples.
