From the Editor

At the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) board of directors meeting in New York City on November 12–13, 2016, it was agreed that we would compose a statement to represent the sentiments of the Association in the light of the tide of world events. The title, “The time for group work,” was agreed. It was also agreed that the statement would:

  • be international and global in its focus

  • be hopeful, realistic and inclusive

  • include a focus on what social group work and IASWG can do

  • above all, be brief and succinct.

Following is the statement:

The time for group work

The climate is changing. In many parts of the world, respect for people who are different from ourselves has diminished and communities feel fractured. Dialogue is too often replaced by bombings and vitriol, hateful populism blasts reasoned, respectful understanding.

It is not difficult to see why many people feel alienated; they themselves are disrespected and disempowered by increasing inequality, job insecurity, and a sense that the important decisions are no longer within their influence.

We need to find ways to become inclusive, to celebrate our differences, and to generate a powerful sense of togetherness. There has never been a more urgent time to bring communities together toward a mutual understanding and a respect, not just for humanity, but for the planet as a whole.

Social group work can create security where there is uncertainty and a feeling of belonging where there is alienation. It has been used to unite and give voice to people in the aftermath of conditions that seemed beyond repair. Through social group work, nations, communities and individuals can repair. This is the hopeful message that IASWG and its members offer to the world.

IASWG stands against oppression and disenfranchisement. As social group workers we stand for and advocate for creating spaces for respectful dialogue to expand our worldviews and perspectives in community with each other.

It’s time for group work

In the very first issue of Social Work with Groups, some 40 years ago, Ruth Middleman (Citation1978) asserted, “I am concerned about putting the group back into group work and putting group work back into social work” (p. 25). IASWG’s “It’s time for group work” statement suggests that it is time to put social justice back into group work.

In keeping with this journal’s longstanding relationship with IASWG, I encourage prospective authors to keep this powerful statement in mind. In particular, to “Let us know how you are using group work to repair the world.” Articles and shorter practice essays are welcome that illustrates group work’s dual focus of individual change and social reform.
