Notes

Washington and Wade Trappe are authors of a standard cryptography textbook, Introduction to Cryptography with Coding Theory.

Some preliminary material (geometric series, mathematical induction, Pascal’s triangle and the binomial theorem, and Fibonacci numbers) are included (with exercises) in an appendix.

The topics are primality and factorization, geometry of numbers, arithmetic functions, continued fractions, Gaussian integers, algebraic integers, analytic methods, and Fermat’s Last Theorem.

Chapter 17, which is an epilogue on Fermat’s Last Theorem and elliptic curves, has no exercises.

The exercise sets contain “check your understanding” problems with answers, exercises arranged by section (with answers or hints for the odd-numbered problems), suggestions for projects (i.e., harder problems), and “computer explorations.”
