Common Themes of Infertility: A Counseling Model

Pages 11-15 | Published online: 22 Jan 2015

Abstract

Counseling interventions for six common themes is infertility are presented, forming a short-term counseling model for mental health Professionals. Integrating infertility counseling into a medical infertility practice is a common method of addressing the emotional needs of infertile couples while they pursue medical testing and treatment. However, a large number of individuals and couples are motivated to seek counseling only after they have terminated medical testing and treatment. As counseling requests increase, counselors and therapists at large need an understanding of the emotional impact of infertility and examples of counseling models. There has been research into common feelings and coping behaviors of infertility, but a void remains in developing a short-term counseling model for infertility clients who feel uncomfortable in a group setting and for whom long-term psychiatric care is not appropriate.
