Buying sex: The phenomenology of being a john

Pages 89-116 | Received 11 Feb 1982, Published online: 18 May 2010

Abstract

The authors obtained data directly from prostitutes’ customers on the feelings and perceptions that comprise being a “John.” There are four phases involved in being a John: conception of intents, pursuit of the encounter, the encounter, and the aftermath. The image of the John that emerged from this study differed from that typically found in the literature on prostitution.
